Prayers for forgiveness

Forgiveness runs in two directions, and most mornings you need both. There is the forgiveness you are asking to receive, for something you did and cannot undo. And there is the forgiveness you are trying to hand over, for something done to you that you never chose. The prayers below are short on purpose, and they are written to be said rather than read about. Pick the one that fits this morning and say it out loud if you can. If you get halfway through and stop, that still counted. Nothing here asks you to feel forgiving before you are.

When you are the one who needs forgiving

Say this before you start explaining yourself. The explaining can wait.

God, it was me. I have spent long enough arranging the words so it sounds smaller than it was, and I am tired of that job. Here it is, unarranged. I am asking for mercy and not for a verdict my pride can live with. Wash the part of me that keeps doing this, not only the thing I did last week. If there is something I owe a person, show me plainly what it is, and give me the nerve to do it today rather than to feel sorry about it for another year. Amen.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your loving devotion; according to Your great compassion, blot out my transgressions. Wash me clean of my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

Salmo 51:1-2, BSB

When the guilt will not stay buried

For the thing you have already confessed and keep confessing again at six in the morning.

Lord, I have brought this to you before. I am bringing it again, not because you missed it the first time but because my memory keeps handing it back to me before I am even awake. You said that sin brought into the light is dealt with, and one of the psalms measures how far it is carried off as the distance from east to west, which is further than I can walk back. Help me believe that about this one specific thing. When it surfaces again tomorrow, remind me it has already been settled and let me get on with the day. Amen.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9, BSB

When you cannot forgive yet

For the morning when saying I forgive them would simply be a lie.

God, I cannot say it yet. What I can say is that I would like to want to. You know exactly what was done and you have never asked me to pretend it was small, so I am not going to force a feeling I do not have just to sound like a better person. I am putting the debt in your hands this morning instead of in mine. Work on me slowly. Keep this from hardening into the shape of my whole life. Ask me again tomorrow. Amen.

And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

Matthew 6:12, BSB

Before you have to be in the same room

For the shared office, the family lunch, the school gate.

Lord, I have to be near this person today and my whole body already knows it. Before I walk in, I would rather pour the truth of it out here, to you, than spill it over everyone who happens to be in the room. Keep me from performing a peace I have not reached. Keep me from picking the argument I have already rehearsed twice in the shower. Let me be civil and guarded and honest, all three at once, and let me leave when I need to leave. Get me home. Amen.

Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge. Selah

Salmo 62:8, BSB

For someone you had to walk away from

Forgiving a person does not put you back within their reach.

God, I am not going back, and I am asking you to hold what I am still owed so that I do not have to carry it around with me. Jesus prayed for the people who were killing him without climbing down to reassure them, and I am taking that as permission. Do with this person whatever needs doing. That work is yours and it was never mine. Take the running commentary out of my head. Free my hands for the life I still have. Amen.

Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up His garments by casting lots.

Luke 23:34, BSB

Before you close this page

Forgiveness is something you do about a debt. It is not an agreement to be hurt again, it is not the same thing as trust, and it does not require you to be anywhere near the person. Those are separate decisions and you are allowed to make them separately and slowly.

If someone is still harming you — physically, sexually, financially, or by making you afraid inside your own home — then safety is the first question and not the last one. Leaving is not a failure to forgive, and no prayer on this page asks you to stay. Tell a real person: a doctor, a lawyer, a friend you trust, a local support service, or your emergency number if you are in danger now. This page is not legal, psychological or pastoral advice, and it is not a substitute for any of them.

Pray one of these again tomorrow, even if today's felt like nothing happened. Forgiveness almost never arrives in a single morning; it arrives in the ninetieth one.
