Five prayers for when you are exhausted
These are prayers to say, not to read about. Say them out loud if you can, even quietly, even in the car. Tiredness makes people vague, and speaking gives a shape to something that has been sitting formless on your chest for weeks. Take one. You do not have to pray all five, and you do not have to mean every word the first time you say it.
When you wake up already tired
Pray this before your feet hit the floor, or on the edge of the bed.
God, I am awake and I am already tired. I have not started and I am behind. I do not know how to make this day less than it is, so I bring it to you as it is. Meet me here, at the beginning, before anyone needs anything from me. Be the one who steadies me today, because I cannot steady myself. Bring my soul back to a place of rest. Amen.
Return to your rest, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.
Salmo 116:7, BSB
When there is too much to do
Pray this with your list in front of you, or with the day already going badly.
Lord, I am carrying more than I can hold and I keep pretending otherwise. Here is the list. Here is the part of it that is genuinely mine, and here is the part I took on because I could not say no. Show me the difference. Sustain me in what is mine. Give me the courage to set down the rest. I am giving you the weight of this day, and I will probably try to take it back by nine o'clock, so meet me again then. Amen.
Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.
Salmo 55:22, BSB
When your body is running out
Pray this when the tiredness is physical and no amount of resolve is touching it.
God, my body is telling me something and I have been ignoring it. I am not lazy and I am not faithless; I am worn out. When Elijah had nothing left, you did not begin with a lecture. You let him sleep, and then you fed him, and only after that did you speak. Do that for me. Give me sleep. Give me food. Give me the sense to accept help when it is offered and to ask when it is not. Amen.
One honest note alongside this prayer: exhaustion that lasts and does not lift with sleep is worth taking to a doctor. Nothing on this page is medical advice, and praying is not a substitute for being examined by someone qualified. Very often the answer to this prayer arrives wearing ordinary clothes: a friend, a diagnosis, a treatment, an afternoon someone cleared for you.
Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” And he looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again. A second time the angel of the LORD returned and touched him, saying, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.”
1 Kings 19:5-7, BSB
When you need to put the day down
Pray this at night, with the lamp off, before the replay starts.
Father, the day is over whether or not it is finished. I am going to stop now. The things I did badly are still yours to redeem, and the things I did not get to will still be there in the morning. I am not the one holding the world together. Let me lie down and actually sleep. Keep the people I love while I cannot. Amen.
I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
Salmo 4:8, BSB
When you have no words left
Pray this when prayer itself feels like one more task.
Jesus, you said to come if I am weary, so I am here, and that is all I have. I have nothing to bring and nothing clever to say. I am tired of trying to be enough. Take what is on my shoulders and give me your way of carrying things instead. If I fall asleep in the middle of this prayer, count it as prayer. Amen.
Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30, BSB
If you come back to this page tomorrow and pray the same one again, that is not a failure of imagination. Repeating a prayer is how most tired people have prayed.
